Sure, you have probably been bombed with a plethora of faceless online mixing and mastering services or people who just will put Ozone on the master bus and let it do its thing.
If thats what your music needs then fine...but this process is a bespoke one for artists looking to develop a unique sound.
I work with you...a personal service where we talk & collaborate to understand your vision to make real of what you hear in your head.
Using Sienna Sphere we are able to listen to together live, and discuss everything in real time no matter where you are based. Its like a Zoom call but with high quality audio.
My process is based purely around communication, building an artistic relationship & understanding your intent and ideas. First we develop a clear creative direction, then find the best (or worst) technology to make it a living breathing piece of musical art.
I started at SAE recording school many, many years ago. It’s was slow, I prefer real world trial and error experience so I naively took my terrible 4 track cassette recordings to a local studio to see if anyone would give me a moment.
Strangely they gave me a job. It was York St Studios in New Zealand. Equipped with a 1974 EMI Neve and 2¨ Studer tape machine this studio was the sort of space fools dream of...though today I am 100% ITB and happier without the world of tape.
They started me off making coffee and doing errands for almost nothing. I loved it ❤️. I was even involved with building their Mastering Studio...even the dirty work was fascinating!
Producers like Tchad Blake, Youth, Jaz Coleman & Malcom Wellsford - the resident genius would come through. They all had unique approaches to learn from but the common trait they had is they could TELL you exactly what they were trying to achieve. They all had a single minded creative vision for a project.
This is the key to a succesful recording.
What I also noticed is nobody talked about gear so much. Most conversations were based around how to communicate an idea through sound.
Equipment seemed to came last...though I remember one time a producer with a 70 piece orchestra downstairs giving a DAT machine a shotgun. That DAT player had a pretty chill day.
From Crowed House to Balter Space to The Auckland Philharmonia a diverse stream of artists came through the door. What I loved about this studio is it was all about setting up a communicative, positive working relationship and vibe where people could create and take an idea and distil it and make it even bigger.
This was the main lesson I learnt and keep to this day. With this everything magically falls into place. My goal is to bring this direction and experience to your projects.
If that all sounds good and you think we might be on the same wave length then tell me about your project below and we can talk it through from there.
All the best,
David Cullington
